Will Humans Ever Get It? Japan Resumes Whale Hunts.

Sun Nov 18, 2007 at 07:46:49 AM PDT

Yahoo News reports that Japanese whalers renewed their hunt to kill protected humpback whales today.  Families on shore waved flags with smiling whales as the whaling ships planned to head to Antarctic waters, to resume the largest expedition in decades.  The expedition had been halted in February after a fire on the mother ship. (Karma?) The hunt will last until April.

The whalers plan to kill up to 50 humpbacks in what is believed to be the first large-scale hunt for the once nearly extinct species since a 1963 moratorium in the Southern Pacific put the giant marine mammals under international protection.

Japan has remained defiant against international opposition to the hunt, calling those who are opposed, violent environmental terrorists.  Japan contends that as long as the species is not in danger of extinction, they should have the right to hunt whales.  They also contend that the whales are needed for scientific research on reproduction and feeding patterns.  The International Whaling Commission however, says that any scientific research gained from the hunt could be learned by non-lethal means.

Greenpeace   will follow the ship to disrupt the hunt, and I'm glad.  I am personally sickened by humans who think they have dominion over animals. This hunt is cruel, unnecessary and a threat to a protected species. Will humans ever get it?
